Hi

Im taking Alecsensca (targeted therapy) and have noticed my hair has stopped growing but has changed colour.  I was wondering if its a common side effect and if its worth colouring my hair?  Ive been told as long as i use what ive always used and had no side effects it should be fine, but im wondering would it be worth it?

  • Hi Jojodagooner

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Sherrye and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see you’ve joined the lung cancer forum; I hope you are finding it a supportive place.

Hair colour changing while taking Alectinib (Alecensa) is not listed as a common side effect, but after looking at some research I’ve found that there have been cases of hair pigmentation changing for a small number of people that are on targeted therapy in general.

I’m glad you’ve informed your team of this, as this is what we’d always suggest so it can be documented and monitored.

In regard to colouring your hair that’s your decision. Your hair can be vulnerable while on targeted therapy, chemicals such as hair dyes can damage the hair and there is also a risk of reaction to hair dye.

If your team are happy for you colour your hair it maybe helpful to have your hair and scalp condition assessed by a hairdresser firstly to ensure it’s healthy. Then do a patch test followed by a strand test before fully dying your whole head.

You may also find some helpful information on hair dying while on cancer treatment on the Cancer Hair Care website and the Look Good Feel Better website.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Sherrye H,
