Smear Test with Vaginismus

I have previously, about 15 years ago, had CIN3 cells removed. Since then I have gone on to develop severe Vaginismus, making smears impossible. However, I now have some worrying symptoms such as bloating, bleeding and terrible pelvic pain. My GP referred me to the hospital for a smear under sedation, which the hospital have refused to do. Instead they have told me to use dilators for 6 months, but because of the severity of Vaginismus and the PTSD issues I have, I just can't do it. I don't know what to do! My consultant didn't seem interested and another consultant was a man who was so rough and inconsiderate I didn't go back.

  • Dear MT1392,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan and welcome to the online community. My name is Denise, and I am one of the Macmillan Cancer Information Nurses on the helpline.

I am sorry to read you are experiencing difficulties accessing a smear test. If we may suggest having a chat again with your GP about your situation. As you are experiencing new and worsening symptoms, please get these assessed as soon as possible. There may be other treatment options for vaginismus if the dilators are not working.

Your GP can get in touch with your consultant to explain and support your request. If you have a mental health team you can contact them for guidance too.

You can ask to be seen by a female consultant. It is best to contact the hospital and let them know so they have time to book you in with a female medical professional. You can find more information about what choices are available to you in your NHS care here. If you feel your case was not handled appropriately you can also contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service at your local hospital.

I hope this information helps. Please do get back in touch with us if you have further questions. The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial, and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and most mobile phone networks on 0808 808 0000, you can also chat to us or email us 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.

    Kind Regards,

    Denise
