  • Hi, I had some investigations done for abdominal bloating and incidentally I was found to have a large polyp in my gallbladder. I was advised to have my gallbladder removed which is happening late October. Since then I have had a CT scan which showed a focal smooth wall thickening which the significance of was uncertain. I have since had blood tests which show normal liver function but a raised CA19-9 of 144. I have another uss on Sunday but I have not heard from anyone. Do you think I should be  preparing myself for a diagnosis of cancer? I have a MDT meeting at some point. Other history is I have type 1 diabetes
  • Dear Nats88

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Lindsey and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists.

Welcome to the online community. We hope that you are finding the support and information helpful.

I am sorry to read that you are worried about having cancer. It must be an anxious time for you. It is understandable that you have questions about what might be happening.

As a charity we don’t have access to medical records and can’t comment on individual circumstances. There are many potential reasons for abnormal results, including non-cancerous conditions. It is good to hear that your doctors are being thorough in their investigations. It can take up to 2 weeks for the results of tests to be ready. As you mentioned, the results will be looked at in a MDT meeting. Each test gives the team a different bit of information that they can piece together to help work out a diagnosis and then a treatment plan.

You should get an appointment to speak to someone after the meeting. You might want to write down questions that you have ready for that appointment.

We do understand that it is a difficult time waiting for test results. Sometimes it can be good to talk through what’s happening. If you think it would help you can call us free on 0808 808 0000. Our line is open seven days a week, 8am – 8pm. You can also contact us by email or Webchat and we aim to reply to your email within two working days.

    With Best Wishes,

    Lindsey.
