My father had the removal of bladder and of the prostate 3 weeks ago but his stoma has reddish skin around the stoma, and a small amount of white liquid that comes from the stoma. What is it? what can I do?

    Welcome to the online community.

On this platform its difficult to give a diagnosis of what the issue is with your dad’s stoma.

A Stoma formation can be done differently. Stomas can initially be bruised and swollen but will shrink to is normal size within a couple of weeks. It not uncommon to have slight bleeding when cleaned also. Stomas can also sometimes produce mucus; this normally looks like a thick white liquid.

Your dad should have been introduced to a special stoma nurse who will be there to support you both with the care of your dad’s stoma when required.

In a situation like this we would always advise contacting your dad’s treatment team to have this assessed as soon as possible. they would assess the situation and rule out any possible infections for example. They should also give you the contact details for your dad’s stoma nurse for any further support in the future.

On this platform it can be difficult to have a two-way conversation and to fully understand what you are going through.
