Endometrial cancer and HRT

I hope it's ok to ask here, I don't know where else to turn.

My mother passed away in May after developing secondary cancers from an original diagnosis of endometrial cancer.

I visited the doctor about various joint aches and pains and she offered HRT but did say I could think about it due to the fact my mum had endometrial cancer.

Now I don't know what to think :( I just want to ask my mum.... I dont know if she ever had HRT or whether her cancer was hormonal (someone in a forum suggested I find out but not sure where to start) before deciding.

I also found out recently I have an underactive thyroid which she also had so I cant help but think I'll get endometrial cancer too especially as I could do with losing weight.  Oh and also had an ADHD diagnosis which means I can't stick to anything and oh yes a dodgy hip which makes exercise difficult.  Then it could all be perimenopause who knows.  And then I feel bad posting here as I don't even have cancer.

I feel so lost.  I wish my mum was here Sweat

  • Dear

Thanks for getting in touch with the Macmillan support line. I’m Linda, one of the nurses from our support line.

Making decisions about taking HRT can be difficult especially when there is a history of cancer in the family. I’m sorry you feel lost without your mum, that sounds tough, and I hope you have support.

Though there can be a slightly higher risk when a close relative has been diagnosed with endometrial there are other possible risk factors too. This is our information about risks associated with womb cancer.

For further information it might help to look at the guidance offered by the NHS and Patient Info about HRT to weigh up the benefits and risks. Menopause Matters is also a good resource.

It may be worth going back to your GP for a further chat, and to ask if it would be helpful to referred to a menopause clinic to help.

As a support line it isn’t possible for us to offer a clinical opinion, but I hope the information above helps and that you are able to reach your decisions soon.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Linda (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
