CT scan result

I had a CT scan on September 1. This follows on from Colorectal surgery in May 2022. It is part of the follow-up procedure from the nurse specialist team. I thought I would get the result within 2 to 3 weeks, But it seems I may have to wait until my next appointment with the consultant which is October 8th. That will be a review of my overall progress, including the results of the scan. I’m not clear from my emails with the nursing team whether I can expect information before that when the scan outcome is received by their team. I just wondered if you knew what the usual procedure would be. This is with Oxford University Hospitals by the way. It was a scan of pelvic area, abdomen and thorax.

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Sarah and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists.

I’m sorry to read that you have been told that the result from the scan won’t be when you were expecting. It’s understandable to ask if this is normal procedure.

Hospitals can have their own local policies, as we are separate from the NHS we don’t have any access to what they might be. There is little information about follow up appointments on the Oxford University Hospital website.

Your consultant may have decided to wait to give you the results in person, this doesn’t mean that it’s anything to worry about but they may prefer to talk you through the results face to face, giving you the time to ask any questions.

If this is something that will worry you while you are waiting for your appointment, it might be an idea to call your bowel specialist nurse and ask if the results are back.

I really hope this information was helpful.  Please know, you can always give us a call to talk things through further.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Sarah (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
