Hi, I had  radical nephrectomy last July, my tumour was 16cn x 10cm x 14 cm so huge! I have never been told what stage and grade my cancer was although if was late stage and a grade is aggressive i don't hink that will help! They got it all!!! My 6 month scan  results were fine! I have just had  the results from my 12 month scan, the urologist said that they would scan me in 6months instead of 12 as there are some changes around the site where the cancer and kidney was, they arent significant changes! What does changes mean? He has reassured me to ring anytime and if  i loose weight, have pain or be  unusually tired to get hold of him!

I am resssured that checking me in 6 months, but in the meantime am worried that i will miss something and is the pain I have from the scar site normal, indeed what is normal pain and should I still have it after 12 months! I did say that the pain I am having is no more that I expect around the huge scar as I have been told it can take up to 3 years for the insides(muscles etc) to heal properly!

Can you help me make a bit more sense of this result! I know I  can talk to my urologist but feel a bit silly ringing him again to get clarification!

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Sarah and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists.

I see from your profile that you have joined our kidney cancer forum, I hope you are finding it supportive.

Feeling worried after being told there are some changes at the site you had your kidney removed is understandable. From the information you have given it sounds like the kidney cancer was at an early stage if surgery was the only treatment recommended by your hospital team which is reassuring.

It’s difficult for the nurses here on the support line to know what the changes may be on the scan, as we don’t have access to your medical records.

If this is something that will continue to worry you it might be a good idea to take your surgeon up on the offer of getting in touch with him to discuss this further. He will be able to talk through what the changes maybe be due and also let you know what the grade of kidney cancer was.

You also mention you are still having pain and although you have already mentioned this to your surgeon please do let him know if the pain gets any worse. Discomfort from surgery 12 months later can be expected but shouldn’t be affecting your day to day activities. It would be a good idea to keep a pain diary as there may be times in the day that the pain is worse and will show you if there is a pattern.

Recovery from treatment can vary from person to person so it’s important to try and bare this in mind, be patient and try not compare yourself to anyone else.

I really hope this information was helpful.  Please know, you can always give us a call to talk things through further.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Sarah (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
