Meningioma and driving

My mum has had recurrent meningiomas but has been clear of treatment for a year. She has been told that three of tumours are growing but there is no cause for treatment at the moment and doctors are recommending and watch and wait plan. She is asymptomatic and has never had symptoms. The dr has said she won’t be able to drive as the tumours are growing (around 3mm in 4 months) however online advice suggests that for this type of tumor the guidelines only state you must not have undergone treatment less than a year ago. Please advise. Thanks!

  • Hi Im26

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Lindsey and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can understand that you would want some clarity about whether your Mum is able to drive or not.

As a charity we don’t have access to medical records and can’t give specific advice about your Mum’s suitability to drive, but we can certainly give you some general information that may help.

The Brain Tumour Charity have information about driving and brain tumours. Several things are taken into consideration including the type of brain tumour, length of time from treatment, where in the brain the tumour is and what grade it is. If she is unsure about these details she could talk with her team to get clarification. This might help you both to understand why the recommendation was made.

The DVLA can issue a fine of up to £1,000 if they aren’t informed of a condition that could affect driving.

    Kind Regards,

    Lindsey,

    Cancer Information Nurse.
