  • Hello Aberdeen L,

Thanks for contacting us. I’m Gail, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line. You may also find our Breast Cancer Forum useful as you go through your treatment.

It is not unusual to experience pain and shoulder stiffness after breast surgery, which can last for months and sometimes years after treatment. Nerve damage can occur after breast surgery and may be the cause of the random shooting pains you are experiencing. Some chemotherapy can make nerve damage worse, and this may be why you are aware of these symptoms now.

You may also be feeling more fatigued and less well in general, due to your chemotherapy, so symptoms may be more noticeable than before. It’s important to let your Oncology team know about any new and persistent symptoms. Contact your Oncology CNS/ Key worker and they will be able to assess you and advise on medication to manage the symptoms, until they settle down.

    Best wishes,

    Gail
