Hello,
finally my husband has his first appointment by phone with the oncologist next week.
We already have a list of questions and have done our own research on likely treatments. The nurse says it's likely he will be advised to have immunotherapy. He currently has no symptoms at all. There were 2 lesions found on the lower lobes left and right. The smaller one was surgically and completely removed for the biopsy. All other organs are clear.
QUESTIONS
1. We understand that there are likely to be other cancer cells/lesions in the body that have not yet been able to be detected on scans etc. However, given that there is only one lesion now in the entire body, we're wondering what the pros and cons are of having it surgically removed as apposed to drug therapy? With immunotherapy we are told he would be monitored every 3 months to see if the treatment is effective or not. Could they not take out the lesion then scan again every 3 months to see if it reoccurs then start drug therapy if appropriate?
2. Where can we see stats on people who choose not to have treatment? There only seem to be stats comparing different treatments.
3. Where can we find stats on people dying with cancer but not from it? For instance, with prostate cancer it is well known that men often die with it, not from it and in the past never having known they had it.
4. Our initial appointment with the cancer nurse yetserday didn't touch on our mental/emotional needs or that of our family. My husband has been referred to QE in Birmingham rather than our local hospital so we don't seem to be able to access local support at the moment. Is this right? I have recommended our 5 children check out your website and make use of the helpline.
Many thanks, Squeak
