Hi what is the average prognosis for metastatic advanced stage 4 liver cancer following unsuccessful immunotherapy please? A family member has asked not to know but I would like an idea of time to help process the grieving and to know what support I can give.

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

I see from your profile that you have joined one of our forums and I hope that you are finding it helpful.

I’m sorry to read that your family member’s treatment for stage 4 liver cancer has been unsuccessful. When someone is given new like this it can affect everyone in different ways.

Our booklet about coping with advanced cancer may be useful for you to look at.

We also have information about supporting someone with cancer and a booklet about talking with someone who has cancer. These may help you as you look at ways to support your family member.

When looking at someone’s prognosis there are different factors that doctors take into account. It would be difficult for us to give a timeframe as we do not have any information about your family member.

You may find this information about anticipatory grief helpful to read.

Supporting a loved one with cancer can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Please make sure to look after yourself too.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
