My husband has been diagnosed with a 3cm low rectal tumour. He’s 64, fit, not on any medication, not overweight, feeling a bit like ‘why has this hspppened’

i have seen the surgical referral to the oncologist that refers to ‘CRM involvement’

i have been a bit silly and googled this - all I can see is a very poor prognosis

can anyone give me any hope? I haven’t told my husband what I have seen.

  • Hi ,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. I hope you’re finding it helpful.

My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

I’m sorry to read about your husband’s diagnosis of rectal cancer. It’s understandable that you are both asking, ‘why has this happened’. That is a common response to a cancer diagnosis. It’s not unusual to feel many different emotions at this time.

I can see that having looked at this information, about CRM involvement, online you are worrying about your husband. When a doctor is looking at a person’s prognosis there are different factors that they take into account.

Whilst I understand how easy it is to look on the internet for information you have to remember that Google does not have your husband’s information and can only give you general information. It’s important to wait and speak to the oncologist who has all your husband’s information and see what they say about his situation.

It’s important that you also look after yourself whilst you support your husband. Supporting someone with cancer can be emotionally and physically exhausting.

Maggie’s is an organisation that can offer support to both of you.

Often talking to others going through a similar experience can be helpful to do. There is nothing quite like the support that you can get from others who know what it’s like. We have a great online group that you can join.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,
