My mother has recently been diagnosed with uterine cancer and is awaiting MRI scan and biopsy results. She had a very bad night of pain. I’ve been intouch with neath and port talbot who have chased the MRI and we’ve recently been called to say it’ll be tomorrow afternoon. In the meantime she’s taken her paracetamol and ibuprofen which has helped but is still in a lot of discomfort. I’ve told her surgery but have to call back after 1. We’ve also left a message with her macmillan nurse. Just feeling very helpless seeing her in pain, can you suggest anything

  • Hi Tor,

Thank you for contacting us. My name is Rachel and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line. I’m sorry to hear that your mother has been diagnosed with uterine cancer and that she’s been experiencing a lot of pain overnight. It’s awful seeing someone you care about in pain and I’m glad you’ve reached out for information about the best way to help her.

Here on the support line, we aren’t linked to the NHS and don’t have access to medical records, so we are unable to give specific advice about symptoms or medication. We would always suggest that anyone whose experiencing new or worsening symptoms seeks urgent medical advice. If you haven’t been able to get an appointment for your mother to be seen by her GP today or her symptoms haven’t improved or are worsening, you should call NHS 111 as soon as possible today. They are available 24 hours to give urgent medical advice to people living in England, Scotland and Wales.

We’d also suggest you update your mother’s cancer team about any changes to her pain or prescribed medication when you can. People with cancer can have pain for a number of reasons and her team are best placed to help her to manage this in the  longer term.

    I hope this helps.

Please don’t hesitate to come back to us at any time to discuss further support that we can offer.
