Hi I had a surgical biopsy done about 6 weeks ago and thankfully it turned out not to be cancer. But I have noticed when I don't have a bra on I can see and feel what I presume is the marker clip. It is just under then skin. Is this normal and ok? Thank you .

  • Hi Trentend59,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Rachel and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line. It’s great to hear that your recent biopsy didn’t lead to a cancer diagnosis, but it’s completely understandable that you have questions about whether it’s normal to be able to see and feel the marker clip under your skin when you’re not wearing a bra.

It’s usual for marker clips to be left in place after a breast biopsy is taken. They are very small and don’t usually cause any harm or discomfort if they aren’t removed. Occasionally the clips can migrate or move or become infected after insertion. This can cause discomfort, swelling, redness, heat, discharge, and feverishness. On the support line we aren’t linked to the NHS and can’t assess your medical records or give specific medical advice. If you have any of these symptoms you should call NHS111 today as you may need some antibiotics.

If you don’t have any symptoms of infection, we’d suggest you contact your breast clinic or GP. They will be able to examine you and advise whether these changes are normal for you after your biopsy.

I hope this information is useful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything else that we can help you with. We are available 7 days a week 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000.
