My son has just been diagnosed with lung cancer and lives in Holbeach Lincolnshire. From what he has told me if treatment can't be done at King's Lynn he will have to travel to Nottingham and as he won't be able to drive after treatment is there any chance of transport being made there and back. As you can imagine he's only 36 got another child on the way and he's mentally not ready to make decisions yet but as a concerned father I think it prudent to cover all bases. Unfortunately I can't drive and live 73 miles away from him in Norwich.

Any assistance will be gratefully received.

Kinds regards.

  • Hi Daddyo and welcome to the online community. My name is Anne, and I am one of the nurses on the Support Line. I’m very sorry to read of your son’s recent diagnosis of lung cancer and understand this must be a worrying time for you and the family.

Getting to and from Hospital appointments can be difficult, particularly when there is some distance, and the patient is unable to drive themselves. However, Hospitals often provide patient transport services (PTS). In some areas, there may also be volunteer drivers. As we are not directly involved in your sons’ care, it may be best for him to speak to his Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) at the Hospital to have a chat about travel arrangements. If he is unsure of their contact details, his Consultant’s secretary should be able to provide him with them.

Supporting someone with cancer can feel overwhelming at times. There is lots of support out there for you both, but it can feel difficult knowing where to begin. We have an online community with a forum especially for family and friends, which you may find helpful. Also, we are only a phone call way if you feel you may benefit from some emotional support. Sometimes talking things over with someone out with the family can be useful.

You may wish to let your son know about Trekstock which is a charity for young adults living with cancer. There is also the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation which is a fantastic charity providing support to people with lung cancer.

    Take care for now,

Anne - Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
