I had a hysterectomy almost 5 weeks ago , had a few little problems but on the whole things are going quite well , I have lymphoedema in my right leg but now both of my legs are very swollen and feet making them hard to lift up have also had 22 lymph nodes removed of which they found 8 cancerous , have now been told I need radiotherapy am worried that this will make my legs worse and won’t be able to get around . At the moment I have been told I am cancer free but there is a 50/50 chance of it coming back ,is it less likely to come back with radiotherapy is it worse taking that risk .

  • Dear Babbette,

Thanks for getting in touch and a warm welcome to the Online Community, I hope you’ll find it a supportive environment. I’m Helen, one of the Cancer Information Nurses here on the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to hear you are having problems with swelling in your legs and feet after your recent surgery. If you suspect this is lymphoedema, it would be advisable to get an assessment by a healthcare professional.

If they think you have lymphoedema, they should refer you to a lymphoedema specialist. The specialist will then confirm the diagnosis.

Although, there's no cure for lymphoedema, it's usually possible to control the main symptoms using techniques to minimise fluid build-up and stimulate the flow of fluid through the lymphatic system.

Pelvic radiotherapy sometimes causes lymphoedema in the legs, pelvic area, or genitals.  The swelling can develop weeks, months or even years after cancer treatment.

If you have concerns about going ahead with your radiotherapy because of the possible long-term effects, please talk this through with your consultant or your specialist nurse. They will be able to help you weigh up the risks of having the treatment against the risk of the cancer returning.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    With best wishes

    Helen
