I have just finished my first cycle of Chemo and am on a weeks rest but have developed quite uncomfortable bloating this week, is this normal. I have been taking Cosmocol on a daily basis to help pass stools and have been told that buscopan might help.

  • Hi Worried97,

Thank you for contacting us at Macmillan. My name is Penelope and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists. Side effects after chemotherapy can be common and may vary from person to person. You mentioned that the bloating is uncomfortable so we would always suggest that you get advice from your cancer team, GP or NHS 111 immediately. These are the best people to assess your symptoms and offer advice.

If you have a 24-hour contact number for the chemotherapy unit then please speak to them straight away or another health care professional such as your GP. NHS 111 is also available 24 hours a day.

Buscopan can help with stomach cramps in some circumstances but it is not suitable for everyone. We would suggest speaking to a health care professional straight away so they can fully assess your symptoms and give appropriate advice.

If your symptoms were to worsen and if you feel that your condition is ever life threatening, then dial 999.

With these symptoms, please seek medical help as outlined above.  For more general information and support you can also speak with the Macmillan Support Line team of experts. Phone free on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or send us an email.

    Best wishes
