Mammogram and dense breast tissue

My Triple neg breast cancer was an incidental finding from an mri scan of my liver/upper abdominal area.

When called to the breast unit it wasn't detected on the mammogram but confirmed by ultrasound and biopsy.

The surgeon  said my breast tissue was dense hence not seen on mammogram.

That was 3 years ago, when I had my annual mammogram this year the lady doing the scan and I were chatting and I asked about dense tissue and dhe commented that she had been talking with colleagues about mammograms  and accuracy with women with dense breast tissue. I have thought about it and I don't get the reassurance  I should from mammograms. Is there a better alternative  on the nhs?

I know how vital early diagnosis is and was so lucky that my cancer was caught early by the afore mentioned mri

Thank you for your time in reading this  and apologies for waffling

  • Hi Lot21

My name is Sarah one of the Cancer information Nurse Specialists.

Thanks for getting in touch and I can see you are a member of a couple of the online forums. I hope you are finding these helpful and supportive.

Firstly, no need to apologise about waffling! It helps us to support you best when we have as much information as we can about your query.

Breast screening is used to look for cancers which are too small to see or feel. A mammogram is the test used for breast screening to monitor for changes. If you have dense breasts and a mammogram on its own may not be as accurate, you can have an MRI although a mammogram is a helpful way to find any subtle changes and differences. This will be something to discuss with your breast unit or breast cancer team.

It is important that you feel reassured that the right tests are used to pick up any new changes.

I hope this has helped to answer your query today. If there is anything else we can help with, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Sarah
