Large simple renal cyst right kidney - assumed not to be cancer but size is a concern to me

Hi, I'm a little bit concerned about the size of this thing and occasional pain/pressure feelings.  Online research says simple cysts are not cancer, and are rarely treated.

- cuh.nhs.uk/patient-information/laparoscopic-de-roofing-of-simple-renal-cyst suggests they are sometimes treated.

- kidney.org.uk/kidney-cysts suggests they are rarely treated and treatment is regarded as experimental

- my gp says trust the person (sonographer) who did the scan and treatment is not required

A recent ultrasound scan confirmed a 2020 CT scan of a fluid filled structure seen on AAA screening likely correlates to

a large simple renal cyst. This is located at the interpolar region of the right kidney and measures 11 x 7 x 6 cm.

Both kidneys are otherwise normal.

My question is simply 'how big is too big'

I saw the cyst on screen and asked for a copy at the hospital - I was told to ask my GP - GP says you can read the report on the NHS app, but you would have to ask the hospital to get the picture as a Data Subject Access Request - it is not sent to the GP surgery.  My quandary is the trainee sonographer (signed off by the sonographer) says this is ok.  I was not told of the results of the 2020 CT scan.

  • Hi gdl,

Welcome to our Online Community. I’m Kirstine, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists. I’m sorry to read about your worries and understand the anxiety that can be generated by test results.

As a cancer support organisation, we are best placed to support people with cancer related enquiries. I’m glad and reassured when you state that you don’t have a cancer diagnosis, and this has been diagnosed as a simple cyst.

Your question of how big is too big regarding this cyst is best answered by a renal specialist doctor and there is little we can advise on this as it’s not our area of expertise. I can say that ultrasound scans are very sensitive in detecting differences in tissue types and are often the best test to distinguish between fluid filled cysts and solid masses that might be cancerous.

You may find this page on renal cysts of interest or the National Kidney Foundation may be able to offer further information and support.

    Wishing you the best,
