  • Hi DanL,

Welcome to the Online Community here at Macmillan Cancer Support. We hope you find connecting with others and getting support helpful. I’m Kirstine, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists.

It can be a common side effect to have a small amount of blood in the urine, poo or semen for around 1 – 2 weeks after either a trans-perineal (TP) biopsy or a trans- rectal ultrasound scan (TRUS) biopsy. This normally settles on its own. Drinking plenty of clear fluids can help to flush any residue away.

If you felt the bleeding was heavy, or you felt unwell or shivery, or needed to pee more often it’s important to speak to a doctor straight away in case there is an infection or a more worrying bleed. This could be your GP or the out of hours doctors at 111 if you were concerned.

I hope that’s helpful. We’ll be happy to chat through any other questions either here, or on our Support Line. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

    Wishing you the best,
