  • Dear Julian29,

Thank you for reaching out for information and support following your cystoscopy to investigate your urinary symptoms.

Waiting for results or an opinion from a more senior doctor is unbelievable hard, especially when there are other happier and exciting things happening in your life.

Many people feel anxious while they are waiting. You may feel like you have no control over what is going to happen to you.

There is no right or wrong way to deal with these feelings. Some people find it helps to carry on with their usual activities as much as possible. Continuing with everyday activities, such as going to work, can be a welcome distraction from worrying. Other people may feel they cannot concentrate on anything else.

At the moment, we don’t know what the red flat lesions in your bladder are. The urologist, who performed your cystoscopy has very sensibly sent a picture to a more senior colleague for a second opinion. If that doctor has any concerns, they will suggest a further cystoscopy and biopsies.

If you don’t hear from your urology team within a week or two of your cystoscopy, you could phone the urology secretary to ask when you will have some information.

NHS England has introduced a new target called the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS). The target is that you should not wait more than 28 days from referral to finding out whether you have cancer or not. It may be worth keeping an eye on your waiting time and if you are approaching 28 days, speak to the PALS department in the hospital where you are being seen.

I can see you have joined our bladder cancer forum; some people look for more information about cancer during this time. Searching for information can help you feel more in control while you wait for your results. But this is not always helpful.

If you do wish to look for information, please avoid searching Google and stay on sites such as ours and Cancer Research UK.

I hope this information has been useful, please contact us whenever we can help.

    Take care.
