Should I still be in pain a week after my biopsy. Pain is on right side when I breathe in

  • Hi Sarabande.

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Sherrye and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to learn you needed to have a liver biopsy a week ago and are still in pain now.

It’s not uncommon for some people to experience pain in their tummy and right shoulder after a liver biopsy, pain medications are normally prescribed to help. How long this can last for can differ from person to person, as we all recover differently.

At Macmillan Cancer Support with any new, changing, or worsening symptoms such as pain we’d always suggest reporting this to you GP or medical team to be reviewed. If you are already taking pain relief they may suggest trying something else.

If you are unable to get in contact with your GP or medical team, you can also contact NHS 111 for an assessment over the phone.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Sherrye H,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
