  • Hi Msjinks,

I am Sharon, one of the nurses on the Macmillan Cancer Support Line.

I am glad you feel that you can reach out to us for advice and information. It sounds like you are going through a difficult time, please don’t hesitate to call us if you want a chat. We are here every day, including weekends!

We would recommend you discuss your options with your husband’s consultant. They know exactly what he is taking and will be able to give specific advice, but I have found some general information, which may help.

Creon is taken just before or with meals. According to NICE guidelines, Creon tablets can be opened, and the contents mixed with acidic fluid such as apple juice or soft food (then swallowed immediately without chewing). If you were considering doing this it is important that you let the prescriber know, as they will ensure you have the appropriate prescription to allow you to do this safely.

This drug also comes in a powder, which can be mixed with milk or water. The manufacturer advises that this can also be given through feeding tubes.

Your husband’s consultant will be able to advise on which options are most appropriate for him.

I noticed that you have found our pancreatic cancer forum. I hope you are finding it a good source of support. You may be interested to know that Pancreatic Cancer UK also have their own support line and discussion forum.

    I hope this is useful.

    Take care,

    Sharon
