environmental oestrogen - how to avoid in diet, where to get information?

Please could you help me - I am post breast cancer treatment, and have now come off oestrogen blockers after 10 years; I am trying to find information about how much oestrogen is present in the environment eg in milk and milk products, meat and meat products, tapwater etc. My cancer was oestrogen dependant, and I want to ensure I am giving myself the best change to avoid recurrence

This information does not seem to be readily available, and despite several enquiries eg to supermarkets and water companies, I have not been able to access any helpful or reassuring data

Are you able to help please?

  • Hello oestroworry,

Thanks for getting in touch with us and welcome to the online community. My name is Helen, and  I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

After treatment for an oestrogen dependant breast cancer, people often worry that oestrogen in food will increase their risk of the cancer coming back.

There are lots of myths about cancer and diet. This information from the Association of UK Dieticians looks at the myths and facts about some of them.

At Macmillan, we advise people to eat a healthy balance diet. There’s lots more information in this booklet produced by Breast Cancer Now.

I hope this helps. Please don’t hesitate to get back in contact if you need further information or support. You can also speak with the Macmillan Support Line team of experts. Phone free on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or you can send us an email, or contact us by webchat.

    Best wishes

    Helen
