  • Hi Shaw

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see you’ve joined the secondary breast cancer forum. I hope you’re finding it helpful sharing your experiences with others.

I am sorry to hear about your secondary breast cancer. I can imagine how difficult this must be for you right now, especially if you’re currently not having any cancer treatment.

Here at Macmillan, we can give general advice and support. We are independent from the NHS and don’t have access to medical records so can’t give personalised information.

It’s difficult to say how quickly your cancer will spread as everyone is different. Signs and symptoms vary as your cancer progresses. We would suggest asking your team or GP to refer you to a Palliative Care team. They can offer support at home and can manage your symptoms as needed.

Cancer treatment varies for individuals. It may be worth asking your team if your eligible for any clinical trials, if no other lines of treatment is currently being offered. You may find this link helpful to look at.

It’s never easy having to weigh up your own mortality and communication about end-of-life care is really import at this stage. Having an open and honest conversation helps to reduce any stress and anxiety you may feel and helps with your ability to cope as your cancer advances.

Assisted dying is still a taboo subject and there is currently an ongoing national debate around this. As it currently stands the NHS cannot refer to Dignitas. You may find it helpful talking through your concerns with Marie Curie.

You can also talk to one of our nurses on the support line. Sometimes giving us a call can help. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.

I hope this information has been helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.
