Toenail fallen off

Following my second Docetaxel infusion my little toenail fell off last night. There's no sign of infection but it is a bit sore. Should I be covering it with a plaster or something? Is there anything else I should avoid? Worried about doing the wrong thing.  Thanks

  • Hi Ghislaine,

Welcome to the Macmillan Online Community. We hope you find it a warm and welcoming place to ask questions and seek support. I’m Kirstine, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists here within the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to hear your little toenail has come off. I can imagine that must feel quite tender and a bit unsettling. Some people unfortunately will experience changes to skin and nails when having chemotherapy. Our website has a wide range of tips to help care for skin and nails during treatment, but sometimes nails falling off is unavoidable.

I’m glad you don’t think it’s infected. Keep an eye on it and if you spotted increased redness, heat or discolouration, or if there was any moistness or pus then speak to your team straight away. It will be fine to bathe normally, usually warm running water from the shower is best, and you can use a gentle moisturiser on your feet and nails.  If it’s more comfortable to place a soft plaster over it that’s fine to do. Just be sure to change it and check under it every day. Wear well fitting, comfortable shoes and keep your other toenails trimmed short.

You could mention it to your treatment team when next there and if necessary, they can arrange for you to see a podiatrist.

    I hope that helps.

Best wishes with the rest of your treatment, and don’t hesitate to reach back out to us again.
