MRI of the Pelvis

What does an MRI of the pelvis cover please?

I know it covers lymph notes, the omentum and gynaecological organs etc but does it also cover the bowel and distal ileum etc?

I know the report says that if the upper abdomen needs to be covered too then a CT scan should be ordered as a follow up etc.

Thanks

  • Hi Glass Not Full,

Thank you for your question. My name is Penelope and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists. I can see you have joined some our forums. I hope you are finding them helpful and supportive.

I have looked into what might be commonly seen in an MRI of the pelvis. It appears that it would generally be looking at the area between the hips which would include a woman's uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. So the gynaecological organs as you mentioned. It also can check the rectum and anal area. Sometimes an abdominal and pelvic MRI would be done together giving more information on the bowel and other organs as well.

The exact areas imaged would depend on the information on the MRI request form. Information from the clinical website radiopaedia suggests that the MRI protocol used should be tailored to the specific indication or clinical question.

Speaking to the doctor or nurse that ordered the scan, therefore, might be helpful to fully understand the full extent of what area was requested and seen on the MRI imaging and any implications.

If you would like to discuss this further or for support on how you are feeling about test results or anything else, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us on the number below. You can also see our website for all the ways we can help.

    Best wishes,
