CHRONIC COUGH FOLLOWING KIDNEY CANCER

Good Afternoon,

I had a full right nephrectomy in 2017, following a stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

I'm lucky, and touch wood, all is well now in this respect. What I can't seem to get to the bottom of, is that I've had a chronic cough ever since! I have been forwards and backwards for appointments and checks with regards this, but nothing can be found.

Has anyone had any experience of this also?

Thank you.

  • Hi Toriana,

Welcome to the online community. My name is Penelope and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists.

I am pleased to hear that all is well following your cancer diagnosis. With the multiple appointments that you mentioned it sounds frustrating that no one has been able to tell you what is causing your cough. A cough can be due to many causes. For example, it can be a side effect of some cancer treatments or due to a lung condition or infection.

You don’t mention when you were last seen by a health care professional. As you still have a cough, we would suggest making sure that you GP is aware. It is important that they know that you still have this symptom and how it is affecting you. Any symptom that is persistent or worsening should always be reported. Even if it has been investigated in the past. For any rapidly changing or worsening symptoms you can also contact NHS 111.

From your message I also wonder if you were hoping to connect with other members of the online community. If so the kidney cancer forum or the life after cancer forum might be the place to post your question. Please remember though that with any symptoms medical advice is the most important thing.

For many people adapting to life after treatment for cancer can have challenges. If you would like to talk things through further at any point then you would be welcome to contact us on the Macmillan Support Line on the number below.

    Best wishes,
