I have a pea sized hard lump in my armpit first noticed it around 3 weeks ago. I am 40 years old.

my GP said it’s likely just be a blockage and should go in a couple weeks it’s still there and I am concerned

I had a total hysterectomy around 10 weeks ago and not sure if could be related

I have a history of BC in my family and am worrying should I have a scan or biopsy to ensure the lump isn’t anything more serious?

  • Hi Michelle332807

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I hope you’re recovering well from your hysterectomy with minimal discomfort. Please reach out to your team if you’re having any post-surgical problems.

Here at Macmillan we can give general advice and support. We are independent from the NHS and don’t have access to medical records so we can’t give personalised information.

It’s understandable you’re concerned about the pea sized lump in your armpit, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer. It’s only natural to feel this way.

I am glad to hear you’ve spoken to your GP about your concerns, and they suggested what the lump might be. However, it may be worth speaking to them again to let them know the lump is still there and you are worried about it.

It’s also important to let them know if you have any other symptoms such as pain or discomfort in the armpit area. They will be in an ideal position to refer you for an ultrasound scan (USS) to check the lump as this is the quickest way to identify and diagnose any problems.

You may find talking to Breast Cancer Now (BCN) helpful, as they offer a range of support and advice. Or you can talk to one of our nurses on the support line. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.

I hope this information has been helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.
