Hi there, I'm new to the site and wondered if someone could help me,

My best friend who has late stage prostate cancer wants to find someone to administer intravenous vitamin C and B to him as it makes him feel so much better whilst battling this horrible disease. He is unable to leave the house and we've contacted so many people to see if they will come out but to no avail.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of where I might be able to find a private nurse or practitioner to do this, the GP hasn't been any help as he doesn't think there is any point in the vitamins but it's made a huge difference to my friend who has been taking it.

Just to add that my friend was in London and had someone there but is now back in Somerset as he wants to die at home. Thank you so much to anyone reading this.

  • I am Sharon, one of the nurses on the Macmillan Cancer Support Line.

Thank you for getting in touch with us. I am pleased that you feel you can ask us for advice and support. If you think it would help you or your friend to talk things through please do not hesitate to call us.

It is a shame that your friend feels his GP isn’t being supportive, but it is still important that he keeps them informed of any supplements he is taking. High doses of certain vitamins (such as Vitamin C) can affect how some drugs are absorbed.

Your friend may find the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre interesting as the information is based on latest available evidence. It has information on Vitamin B6, B12 and Vitamin C, as well as many other herbs and vitamins.

The Care Quality Commission website is a good place to look for nursing agencies. You can search for local homecare agencies and see the latest CQC rating for each service.

I hope you find someone to help him soon. He may also find Marie Curie’s booklet ‘Being cared for at home’ useful as it explains what support is available in the community.

Remember, we are here for you too. As well as our support line, we have webchat, and a ‘supporting someone with incurable cancer’ forum on our online community.

    Take care

    Sharon
