Paclitaxel hair loss after regrowth?

Hello

I am having adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. I have completed 4 rounds of ec and have had round 7/12 and have been having steady hair regrowth across my head and the rest of my body. When running my hand through my hair today on several occasion I have come away with a number of strands of hair. Is this likely to be the start of hair loss as a result of the cumulative effect or could this still potentially be just hair renewal through its normal growth cycle?

Thanks x

  • Hi Pancakes

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the Online Community, I’m Joanne and I’m one of the cancer information nurses on the Macmillan Support Line. I can see you are also a member of our breast cancer forum. We hope you are finding it helpful.

I’m not sure from your post if you are still receiving treatment for your breast cancer. Hair regrowth after chemotherapy is very individual and can take varying times. Hair can often be a different colour or texture to how it was before treatment. Cancer Hair Care has an excellent website detailing what to expect when your hair starts to grow back.

Other breast cancer treatments can also cause hair thinning, such as hormone therapy. It isn’t clear from your post if you are having this treatment, but it is an often underreported and overlooked side effect.

If the hair loss continues it would be advisable to contact your treatment team to see if they can identify a cause.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want further information or support.

    Best wishes

  • Hello,

Yes I have had 7 out of 12 sessions of paclitaxel. I had assumed given that I had got this far and my hair was growing again, I was unlikely to then lose it again Disappointed
