I'm due to have my first of 6 EC Chemo sessions tomorrow morning. I have just read I should have a small meal "a few hours before" but as I am starting at 9.30am should I avoid eating breakfast? This would be around 7.00am if I do. Many thanks.

  • Hi JustLikeMaryPoppins

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Karen and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

You say that you are starting the first of six cycles of  Epirubicin and Cyclophosphamide (EC) chemotherapy this morning at 09.30. It shouldn’t be a problem for you to have breakfast. I know this response may be a little late and you may already be travelling to the hospital for your treatment.

Here’s a little information about what to expect today. You will see a doctor or nurse before you have your chemotherapy and you will be able to ask any questions you have. If your blood results are ok, the pharmacist will prepare your chemotherapy. The nurse will tell when your chemotherapy will be ready today. Your nurse will give you anti-sickness drugs via your drip before you start the chemotherapy.

If you have any pressing questions in future please don’t hesitate to give the nurses a call on Macmillan Support Line by phone or webchat as we are available 7 days, 0800 - 20.00. It can take a little longer to receive a response via Ask a Nurse, as it is open Monday – Friday 0900-17.00 only, but we do try to answer as soon as possible.

I can see that you’ve joined the breast cancer forum on the Macmillan online community. I hope you are finding this helpful and supportive.

I hope all goes well with your treatment today. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call on the support line if you have any further questions.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any information or support needs, the Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial, and emotional support.

    Best wishes

    Karen, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
