I had cancer in left kidney (now removed) -got all clear from later CT scan. Question - how long till it jumps to other parts of the body.  My sister had thyroid cancer - got treated - then all clear only for cancer to turn up later in liver and bowel after 10 years

  • Hello antarctic,

Thanks for getting in touch with us and for your question regarding kidney cancer.  Welcome to the online community, my name is Linda and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to read that your sister’s thyroid cancer returned after 10 years.

Unfortunately, with kidney cancer and other cancers, there can be uncertainty about the chance of the cancer returning, so regular check-ups are important.

Kidney cancer UK’s Can kidney cancer be cured? Offers an explanation that you may find helpful.

With kidney cancer, the regularity and type of follow up depends on the treatment you have undergone and the risk of your cancer coming back. Normally the risk would be classed as low, intermediate, and high.

Your cancer specialist will be able to explain your risk if it has not been discussed with you previously.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

Linda J, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
