Hi. I have beeb diagnosed with breast cancer and I'm awaiting further tests after having biopsies taken. I'm concerned that my lymph node is swollen in the same breast. Does this mean cancer has spread into the node?

  • Hi Debbiem

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community.

My name is Sarah, one of the Cancer information Nurses on the Macmillan support line.

Lymph nodes can be swollen for various reasons. After a breast biopsy there can be some swelling around the area where the biopsy was taken.

As nurses on the online community, we are unable to make a diagnosis from symptoms, as we don’t have access to NHS notes. Further tests will give the breast cancer team a more accurate picture of your diagnosis to ensure the most appropriate treatment for you.

It is understandable to feel anxious waiting for further tests and results and natural to focus on the uncertainties a cancer diagnosis can bring. You may find it helpful to think about preparing for treatment, also known as prehabilitation. This can help you feel more in control of your physical and mental health at what seems an uncertain time.

Our online community has a breast cancer forum, you may find it helpful to talk through with others going through similar experiences and for support.

    I hope this is helpful.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Sarah
