Hello

I have a 11cm complex ovarian cyst, ca125 blood results within normal range. Diagnosed on 21 Jan as admitted to ED with abdominal pain, bloating and vomiting.  I prior symptoms. On 15 April I will have total abdominal hysterectomy, removal of both ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and omentum.

I’m 53 and post-menopausal.

My question is on the omentum as I don’t remember the discussion on why it’s beige removed as well- is this precautionary ?

Many thanks.

  • Hi Tracey,

My name is Kenny, and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists working on the Macmillan support line.   I am happy to hear that you have a confirmed date to have your complex ovarian cyst (which are not always cancerous) removed on the 15 Apr 24.

As the name implies, there is more going on in a complex cyst (than the more common simple ovarian cyst), and because of that there are many questions regarding whether or how they might be associated with ovarian cancer. Because of this, it is not uncommon (for complex cysts that are larger or causing health care concerns), to have surgery recommended as a preventative measure.

Please note that Complex ovarian cyst are also broken down into 3 main types Dermoid, Cystadenoma and Endometrioma.  Decisions on the type of surgery will be dependent on the size and type of cysts, a review of your clinical notes, your test results and current/previous medical history, to establish what is best for you.

Unfortunately, we cannot access NHS notes, scan or test results here at MacMillan Tracey.  This means we are unable to review why your team has decided to perform a total abdominal hysterectomy, with removal of both ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and omentum.  However, you are entirely right in that this may be a precautionary measure by your team – please discuss with them for complete clarity.

I hope you find this useful Tracey.  I also think that it might be really helpful for you to contact our Support line, we are happy to talk to you about any concerns you might have.   You can call either our emotional support or nursing teams on 0808 808 0000 (calls are free).   Our phone lines are open 7 days a week 8am-8pm for all these services.  See what you think.

All the very best on the 15 Apr Tracey.

    Warmest Regards

    Kenny .
