PSA count rising

Hi. since coming off prostap in September last year, my PSA count was 0.01 while on the prostap, since having 3 blood tests since September 23, my count has risen to 6.5. my specialist at Christie has informed me that the cancer may have spread to my lymph nodes and he wants me to have a blood test in June, i am worried that the count has risen too much in so little time, i also have a regular bloods test on 4th April so i will ask them to check my PSA to see where the count is at, as the specialist says that they will only put me back on prostap once the PSA count is 10 or more. NOW, if the cancer has spread to my lymph nodes, what can i expect or what can the hospital do about this matter.

  • Hi Manchi.

Welcome to the online community. My name is Anne, and I am one of the nurses on the Support Line. I see you have joined a few of our forums already. I hope you have found them supportive so far. I understand you are concerned about your PSA which has been rising since September last year.

We would advise you to contact your Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for a chat as they have access to your NHS notes and are well placed to discuss any concerns you may have. PSA can rise for several different reasons, although you mention your Specialist feels the cancer may now have spread to your lymph nodes.

If the cancer has indeed spread to your lymph nodes (also referred to as locally advanced prostate cancer), your Consultant may wish to discuss possible treatment options with you, based upon your own individual situation. This depends on how your general health is and your thoughts on treatment and side effects. You can read more about the main treatments for locally advanced prostate cancer here.

If you feel you may benefit from talking things over with one of my colleagues, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

    Take care for now,

Anne - Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
