Is it common for a biopsy to come back as saying the ovarian carcinoma is high grade but then, after surgery and the entire 18cmx15cm tumour (which had grown a lot in the 3mths since it was first found), histology reports it’s low grade?

  • Hello Glass Not Full,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community.

My name is Carole and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I hope you are recovering well from surgery.

I appreciate that you would like to know how common it is for the cancer grade given after biopsy, to change after surgery.

We know that this can happen, but unfortunately, we can’t say how often it does.

The reason that it can is that after surgery, the pathologist has more tissue to examine.

Histology reports often contain very detailed information, and we would encourage you to ask your hospital team to explain what the pathologist has reported.

    I hope this is helpful.

If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Sending best wishes,

    Carole
