Consultant appointment

I had surgery to remove a tumor in my small intestine 3 weeks ago. I rang to ask about stitches as some still remain and they gave me an appointment with the consultant rather than send ne to the GP practice nurse. The results from my biopsy should be back now. I'm wondering if it's a bad sign that the consultant gave me an appointment so quickly instead of GP?

  • Hello BBELM,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community.

My name is Carole and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I hope you are recovering well from your recent surgery.

It’s only natural to wonder why this appointment has been arranged and what it could mean.

Follow up after surgery can vary between hospitals, and even between departments.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible for us to say for certain why you have been asked to see the consultant. However, it is common to see a surgeon or specialist nurse a few weeks after surgery.

They usually want to check the scar and make sure that everything is healing properly.

If your results are available, they’ll probably explain them to you, and this will give you an opportunity to ask any questions you have.

I hope this is helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch with us if you have further questions.

    Sending best wishes,

    Carole
