How many weeks do I have to wait after completing chemo before I can fly long haul?

  • Hi Myboys,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is David, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

There is no hard fast rule on when you can fly after chemotherapy because it can depend on your individual treatment. But, in general, you are fit to fly once you’re well enough to resume normal day to day activities.

If someone has cancer and flying then some healthcare teams may also advise you wait for up to four weeks after treatment to recover before travelling.

As a general rule, you are strongly advised to discuss your travel arrangements with your consultant who can supply a letter stating if you are fit to fly and travel.

This letter may be required by your travel insurance company and your travel airline.

You are further strongly advised not to travel without travel insurance.

You mentioned long haul flights. It is also important to consider what healthcare provision is like in the country you intend to travel to and if you require travel vaccinations.

We have further information on travel and cancer which you may find useful going forward.

If there is anything else we can help you with please feel free to get back in touch.

    Best wishes

    David, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
