Hi just wondering at what point of cancer would some one with cancer would get pain management from a hospice as my mum has small cell lung cancer and I know she is now receiving pain management from st Columbus hospice

  • Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

I see from your profile that you have joined our lung cancer forum. I hope you are finding it supportive.

You have asked at what point does someone receive pain management from a hospice. Often people assume that you can only get support from a hospice if you are dying. However, they offer support with complex pain and symptoms to people at home with cancer. This support can be given at any point when a cancer is incurable.

If you require specific information about your mum’s condition, you will need to have her permission to speak to her hospice team or GP.

On the Support Line we do not have access to medical notes or NHS systems. Her GP or hospice team are best placed to answer specific questions.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
