  • Dear K45,

My name is Joanne, and I’m one of the cancer information nurses. I’m sorry to hear that you are having repeated urine infections following your radiotherapy treatment for bladder cancer.

I can see from your profile that you are a member of several of our forums and I hope you are finding them helpful and supportive.

Frequency and urine infections are common side effects after radiotherapy to the bladder. The inflammation that causes the infection should reduce when treatment is completed but may take several months. It can also become a long-term side effect.  You mention you have just completed a course of Nitrofurantoin Mercury Pharma tablets. These are anti-biotics that treat urine infections.

You also mention you are passing blood in your urine. Here at the Macmillan Support Line, we can only give general advice and support. We are independent from the NHS and don’t have access to medical records so can’t give personalised information. As this continues to be a problem, and has not improved with the antibiotics, we would advise you to seek medical assessment as soon as possible. We would recommend you call 111 for an assessment today.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want further information or support.

    Best wishes

    Joanne F,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist.
