I have recently had an endoscopy for acid reflux

Suspected hiatus hernia found, said to be small and gastrtiis   Diagnoses  Evidence of cancer - NO   HIatus hernia and gastritis

Biopsy taken to rule out Barretts as "possible tongue of Barretts seen"? my mother had Barretts and my brother died from oesophageal cancer so this is a major worry for me.  Other biopsies taken as well

Since then I have been set a telephone appointment with my GI consultant to discuss results, not face to face.

with my optomistic head on and because I have a son with Aspergers who is worrying himself sick about this I am assuming that a telephone appointment is a positive outcome.?

thank you for any support you could give me here

  • Hi ,

Welcome to our online community and thanks for posting your question. My name is Amy, and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to hear your brother died from oesophageal cancer and your mum had Barrett's oesophagus. It’s only natural to worry when you are having tests for similar symptoms. I appreciate your son, and how he is coping is an added worry for you.

It’s reassuring they feel the endoscopy showed no evidence of cancer. Biopsies are often taken during an endoscopy; even if there is nothing suspicious there to see. So it’s reasonable to remain optimistic at the moment.

You can read more about hiatus hernia and its management here on the NHS website.

There are many positive lifestyle changes that can be made to reduce the risk of Barrett's oesophagus, oesophageal cancer and cancer in general. You may find the Cancer Prevention Recommendations on the World Cancer Research Fund useful to look through and see if there are any positive changes you can focus on.

Waiting for results is a worrying time, so please don’t hesitate to reach back out to us if you have any more questions or need any further support.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

Amy C, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
