TUG FLAP

Two questions.

First, I had a tug flap reconstruction in June last year my leg is always swollen now behind the knee, the back of the leg from thigh is numb.

My leg aches and feels very strange almost like it's a piece of wood. I am consequently very depressed, especially after being told I actually didn't warrant a mastectomy as what they found in my breast was inconsequential.

And genital area feels numb too?

Is this normal for this operation. What can i do?

  • Hi Susu23

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

We’re sorry to read about the issues you are having with your leg following the TUG flap reconstruction.

The side effects of this reconstruction can be a loss of feeling in the upper thigh and swelling of the leg (lymphoedema). It would be useful to speak to your GP or nurse specialist. They can assess you for lymphoedema and refer you to your local lymphoedema clinic if appropriate.

It is important to speak to your nurse specialist or GP about the numbness in your genital area so that they can assess you and decide if this needs to be investigated further.

You mention feeling depressed. We offer free counselling that may be helpful for you. Or you can talk to your GP about what support is available locally to support you.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
