Hello, recently started bicalutimide prior to prostap 3 in a week's time.

Doesn't seem to have any effect at the moment. How do I know if it works?

Also, slightly embarrassing, feel sexually more able than previous, if that makes sense?

Should it be like this?

Thank you.

  • Hi flyingteach,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

Our service is in great demand and although we aim to reply within three working days, occasionally it can take longer. Please accept our apologies for the delay.

When taking bicalutamide, you may not notice any difference in how you are feeling. Some people may have side effects, however you may not be aware of any at present. Your doctor will check your bloods when you are on treatment. This will give an indication of how effective the treatment is. Your nurse specialist will be able to tell you how often they will be checking your bloods.

Bicalutamide is given prior to Prostap to reduce tumour flare. Prostap can cause the body to produce more testosterone for a short time after the first injection. This can make any symptoms you have worse for about a week. This is what is known as tumour flare. Taking bicalutamide should stop any issues caused by this surge of testosterone.

You mentioned that you are feeling more sexually able than previously. A person’s sex drive can be affected by many things. It may be that because you are starting treatment you feel better, and this in turn has improved your sexual drive.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
