I've just had my results from my smear test and its HPV Positive and Borderline changes. Awaiting appointment for Colposcopy. I've always had normal smears since I was 19 and I'm now 41. Im really worried about this even though I know how common it is to have an abnormal result but more shocked this is my first abnormal result after so long. Any advice would be great. Thanks

  • Hello DJG1

Thanks for getting in touch with us and welcome to the online community. My name is Linda and I’m one of the nurses on the Macmillan support line.

It can be hard to get your head around receiving abnormal results but as you mention it’s common. It’s only natural to be feeling worried and shocked at this time.

Colposcopy is normally offered when there are abnormal changes and HPV positive. Some people may have the cells removed at this time and for others a biopsy may be taken and may need further treatment.

You may find Jo’s trust information on cell changes and HPV useful. They also offer other ways to support you, so it may be worth a look.

There is no right or wrong way to cope during this time. For some people it helps to keep busy and to get on with normal everyday tasks, for others it may help to go for a walk or do something else that helps you to relax.

Some people find it helpful to talk over how they are feeling with family or friends, alternatively it can help to speak with one of our nurses directly on the support line.

If this is something you think would help, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch via our support line on 0808 808 0000. We are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
