  • Dear Jo,

Thank you for joining the Macmillan online community. My name is Denise, and I am one of the Macmillan Cancer Information Nurses.

I am sorry to read about your Mum’s cancer diagnosis and ongoing pain not relieved by Paracetamol.

Unfortunately, as we do not have access to NHS records, we are unable to advise directly which medication your Mum can try.

As you have already mentioned your Mum is on Apixaban and indeed some pain relief is not recommended alongside Apixaban, the best way forward would be to contact her GP who can review your Mum’s pain and prescribe her stronger analgesia. There are stronger pain medications available which are suitable to take alongside blood thinners, but other contraindication may need to be considered if there are any, and the GP will be able to address those. You can also contact 111 for advice as they too have access to NHS records and can prescribe pain relief.

If your Mum has access to the community palliative team, you can also contact them for symptom management.

If you wish you can read more about different ways of managing pain by clicking here.

Hope this information helps. Please do get back in touch if you have more questions. You can also contact us by calling 0808 808 00 00. We are open from 8am to 8pm or via our webchat or by email.

    Best wishes,

    Denise
