Hi, I recently had an otricide scan and 24hr urine test looking for Neuroendocrine tumor. I know I have a tumor but waiting to find out exact diagnosis.

I have an appointment next week but the consultant wouldn't tell me anything via phone.

My gut instinct is that if it wasn't they would have told me. Is the fact they won't talk to me via phone mean its likely to be this cancer?

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch, I’m Linda, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists from our Support line.

Waiting for test results can be an unsettling time and it’s only natural to try and second guess what you might be told on the day.

Some consultants will give some information via the telephone, and some prefer not to. There isn’t a standard approach to how either results or a diagnosis is given. It may be that your consultant has preference for face-to-face conversations, irrespective of what they will tell you.

It’s good that you don’t have to wait too long to meet with your specialist but at the same time it can still feel long time off, this is natural. Patient UK offer this guidance to people waiting for test results to help them deal with some of the uncertainty they experience.

And though no one can say for sure what you will be told, in preparation for your appointment this information from the NHS website might help. It has key questions to ask and tips for getting the most out of your appointment.

If in the lead up to your appointment you would like to get in touch with our support line team you are more than welcome. Though we won’t be able to elaborate on what you will be told, it might be beneficial to have a chat as you wait to be seen.
