Hello, I had a tumor removed  from breast in April 2022.  I had chemo, cold capping,  radiotherapy and herceptin injections and have coped well other than some allergies .

I am now on daily letrozole and zometa every 6 months.  I still feel very debilitating joint pain in legs all the time so wondred if it would be appropriate to take collagen powder called  Ancient & Brave naked collagyn ?

I also take Adcal-D3 daily.

Thank you

  • Hi Artie24,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is David, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Great to know you have come through breast cancer treatment successfully but, sorry to hear you are experiencing debilitating joint pain in your legs whilst continuing on Letrozole and Zometa.

This must be hard to deal with after everything you have come through and it is only natural you seek to remedy this issue.

Firstly, we are unable to diagnose your symptoms as we don’t have access to your hospital records or test results.

Both these drugs can cause these symptoms and so we therefore err on the side of caution.

We strongly recommend to everyone that if they have a new symptom, a symptom that persists, gets worse or, is changing then they must report to their doctor in the first instance so they can physically assess and manage from there.

With regards to collagen powder, again we err on the side of caution. There is also no strong scientific evidence base to promote the use of collagen supplements as the studies undertaken to date are not conclusive.

We strongly recommend you discuss this further with your Consultant and the Pharmacist before taking any supplements, vitamins, herbal drugs or Complementary Therapies.

They will want to make sure that there is no drug interaction with your current medications.

We would also advise against purchasing any of these products off the internet as the quality or safety of the contents cannot be guaranteed.

If there is anything else we can help you with please feel free to get back in touch.

    Best wishes

    David,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
