Is it normal for to be passing blood three days after biopsies taken under colonoscopy?   I had heavy bleeding the day of the procedure and it lessened but today it was heavier in the bowl and on the paper.  Should I go to GP.  I feel well otherwise.  But Larry is happily snug in my rectum.

  • Hi Andrew Mc

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Welcome to the online community. I can see you’ve joined the anal cancer forum. I hope you’re finding it helpful to share your experiences with others.

Good to hear you’re feeling well but can imagine this is a challenging time for you. Waiting for results to confirm your diagnosis can bring a lot of anxieties and uncertainties.

It’s not usual to bleed after a colonoscopy, sometimes this can be for a couple hours after the procedure or delayed bleeding days afterwards. In most cases it resolves itself without any further intervention.

Although complications after a colonoscopy are often rare, prolong side-effects can become serious if not assessed. As you are experiencing heavy bleeding, we would suggest seeking medical advice as soon as possible from either your Endoscopy department, NHS111 or attend A&E. They are an ideal position to re-assess your bleeding.

Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. You may find it helpful to talk to one of our nurses on the support line. Sometimes giving us a call can help. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.

I hope this information has been helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

It’s very reassuring to hear you’ve stopped bleeding and you’re aware of the course action you need to take, if you have any further symptoms.

I am glad you’re keeping busy learning new skills and continuing with your club activities. Getting a cancer diagnosis can be tough journey and it’s important to look after your own wellbeing.
