Can they remove skin cancers on head by surgery don’t think I could tolerate radiotherapy

  • Hi Marmie,

My name is Keith and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists.

    Welcome to the Online Community.

On this platform as we are a charitable organisation, we don’t have access to your medical information. For this reason, we have limited information re your clinical history.

There are different types of skin cancer and treatments vary from what type it is and how the individual is affected. Looking at this link will explain the 3 main types in more detail.

In a situation like this we would always advise for you to contact your multidisciplinary team (MDT) to clarify your cancer type and how you as an individual are affect and what treatment options you may have.

This information from the British Association of Dermatologists may also be helpful to understand your situation and possible options moving forward.

Your MDT team should explain your individual set of circumstances and explain your treatment options which may very well include surgery or radiotherapy. But in some situation surgery may not be the best option. Looking at this link will explain different types of treatment that may be offered or considered.

But you must understand what your options are, because if this isn’t done, you can’t give what we call informed consent to allow your treatment team to treat your cancer. There is no rule book on how you do this but a big part of this is in what you want and the support given to help you make the best choice for you. So don’t hesitate to talk to your treatment team and let them know how this is affecting you both physically as well as emotionally so they can give you the best possible support moving forward.

On the Ask an Expert forum, it can be difficult to have a two-way conversation and to fully understand what you are going through. If you’d like further explanation or have any other questions, please feel free to contact us again. If having a conversation would be helpful, please feel free to give us a call or contact us via our web chat platform.

Don't forget you can also talk to other Community members about how you are feeling on our Skin cancer forum and our Emotional support forum.

    Take care.

    Keith, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
